The Premier League has admitted to mistakes in VAR decisions in three recent matches, highlighting ongoing concerns about the technology's effectiveness in the English top-flight.

On Thursday, Manchester United benefited from a disputed penalty in their 3-0 win over Aston Villa, while Tottenham Hotspur felt hard done by after a VAR review failed to award them a penalty in their 0-0 draw with Bournemouth.

United midfielder Bruno Fernandes won a spot kick after spinning into Ezri Konsa, despite little evidence of a foul by the Villa defender. Tottenham's Josh King was also denied a penalty after a VAR review failed to punish him for pushing Harry Kane in the penalty area.

Southampton's James Ward-Prowse hit the bar after a disputed penalty in their 1-1 draw with Everton.

The Premier League confirmed to the BBC's Match of the Day programme that United and Southampton should not have been given penalties, but Tottenham should have been awarded one.

Former Everton midfielder Tim Cahill, a Match of the Day pundit, suggested that a former player should work alongside VAR officials to improve their understanding of player movements.
