Kenya Records 473 New COVID-19 Cases, 8 Fatalities

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has confirmed 473 new cases of COVID-19 in Kenya, bringing the total number of cases to 9,448 as of July 10, 2020.

According to Kagwe, the new cases were confirmed from 6,979 samples tested in different laboratories across the country, with 324 of the new infections being male.

The youngest patient to contract the disease is a one-year-old infant, while the oldest is a 90-year-old individual.

Notably, more men than women have been infected by the disease, with Kagwe attributing this to their tendency to visit overcrowded places.

At the same time, eight patients lost their battle with COVID-19, bringing the total number of fatalities to 181.

However, 76 patients were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recoveries to 2,733.

Kagwe also lauded Kenyan researchers working on a coronavirus vaccine, stating that their work is a world-class facility and a shame that the country has to look for experts from the West.

He warned that the infection rate could rise steadily in the coming days, especially with the opening of the country.

According to government data, 42 out of 47 counties have reported confirmed positive cases.

Health CS Kagwe expressed his condolences to the family of Dr. Adisa Doreen Lugaliki, a medical doctor who succumbed to COVID-19 while working to save the lives of others.
