On a rainy day in April this year, a young girl from Kariciungu village in Murang'a County made a wish that would change her family's life forever.
Anne Njeri, a class 3 pupil, approached a patron of Can-Do-Kids International, Karanja Wamatangi, who was installing a water tank in her school, and requested a better house for her family of six.
Her family, consisting of her sickly parents and six siblings, had been living in a one-roomed iron sheet made house, which was also used to keep their goats, making it hard for Njeri and her siblings to concentrate on their studies.
Thanks to Njeri's determination and Wamatangi's philanthropy, her family's wish was granted, and they were given a new two-bedroomed house, complete with a water tank, a toilet, and new furniture.
Ms. Winnie Mugure, Njeri's mother, who has been sick for years, expressed her gratitude to Wamatangi, saying, 'I can't comprehend that I will live in a permanent house, we are used to endure torrents of rain, sleeping under harsh conditions and most of the time without food. Thanks to the philanthropist who has helped us with a new shelter.'
Wamatangi Foundation, under the patronage of Karanja Wamatangi, managed to mobilize about Sh500, 000 to build and furnish the house for the family.
According to Mr. George Gachuru, an official from Wamatangi Foundation, 'Our organization has been dedicated to construct water tanks to schools in an effort to improve hygiene in local learning institutions, but in some special cases like the one of this family, our patron Karanja Wamatangi opted to assist.'
He added, 'We have very many families suffering but support in whatever way may help some families come out of poverty.'
