On July 10, 2020, Kenya marked a somber milestone in its fight against COVID-19 with the first reported death of a medical doctor.
Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe announced the tragic news during his daily briefing, requesting a moment of silence for the deceased.
"I am saddened to announce that today, we have lost the first doctor to COVID-19," Kagwe said, extending condolences to the doctor's family.
The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) had previously raised concerns about the safety of healthcare workers, urging the government to provide necessary protective gear.
Despite these concerns, Kagwe assured that the government remains committed to equipping healthcare workers with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
As of July 10, 2020, Kenya had recorded 9,448 infections and 181 deaths, with eight of the fatalities occurring since Thursday night.
