On July 10, 2020, Kenya marked a somber milestone in its fight against COVID-19 with the loss of its first medical doctor to the virus.
Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe announced the tragic news during his daily briefing on the virus update, asking for a minute of silence in respect.
"I am saddened to announce that today, we have lost the first doctor to COVID-19," Kagwe said, extending condolences to the doctor's family, including her two sisters.
The government has faced mounting pressure from the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) to provide healthcare workers with essential protective gear in the fight against COVID-19.
Despite these concerns, Kagwe assured that the government remains committed to equipping healthcare workers with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
As of July 10, Kenya had recorded 9,448 infections and 181 deaths, with eight of the fatalities occurring since Thursday night, including the medical doctor.
