On July 9, 2020, a 17-year-old boy from Marel area in Bungoma Town was shot by police officers enforcing the dusk-to-dawn curfew.

The incident occurred when the teenager went outside his parents' house to investigate commotions emanating from a nearby road.

According to witnesses, the boy had heard men arguing in a tuktuk and went outside to see what was happening. He was shot in the upper part of his thigh by one of the tuktuk occupants, who was later identified as a police officer effecting the curfew.

The victim, a Form Three student, was taken to Bungoma County Referral Hospital by a Nyumba Kumi Initiative elder.

Bungoma South police boss, Wilson Nanga, defended the police action, stating that they suspected the victim was a thug roaming around during curfew hours.

However, the Bungoma County Referral Hospital's lead doctor reported that the teenager is responding well to treatment.
