Published on July 10, 2020, Nigerians have taken to social media to express their outrage over a job advertisement in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) that explicitly excludes Nigerians from applying.
The job advertisement, posted by Shirley Recruitment Consultants on the website Joblinks, seeks to hire merchandisers in Dubai with at least one to three years of experience.
However, the advertisement has sparked widespread criticism after specifying that only 'male or female African candidates except Nigerians' are eligible to apply.
Many Nigerians have taken to Twitter to express their disappointment and frustration over the discriminatory job advertisement.
As one Twitter user, Emeka Gift (@EmekaGift), pointed out, 'Mazi Nnamdi Kanu wrote: 'We told you that the zoo is finished'. For a country to only exclude Nigerians from applying for a job is not only discriminatory but unlawful under international laws.'
Some Nigerians have also suggested that the recent arrest of alleged Nigerian online scammers in the US may have contributed to the decision to exclude Nigerians from the job application process.
