On a warm summer day, there's nothing quite like adding a statement piece to your outfit to turn heads. But, as fashion enthusiasts know, chunky accessories can be a double-edged sword – they can either make or break an outfit. To avoid the latter, we've put together five essential rules to live by when wearing chunky accessories.

First and foremost, minimize on other accessories. When working with chunky accessories, be it a bangle, dangling earrings, or a necklace, let your one chunky piece shine and stand out. This means keeping other accessories on the minimum to avoid looking tacky and unsure of what you're doing.

Next, go for one chunky at a time. If you decide to work with a chunky necklace, do not pair it with dangling earrings or extra-large bangles. You may end up looking like a clown. Maybe you can get away with a chunky necklace paired with chunky bangles, but when it comes to the neck area, do not mix chunky necklaces with chunky earrings.

When it comes to matching your accessories to your outfits, always be aware of your outfit. Not all pieces in your closet will match with accessories or are even meant for accessories. Chunky necklaces look better when dressed with bare shoulders, like when putting on off-shoulder tops. Dangling earrings, on the other hand, look better when paired with turtlenecks – it spices up the long and dull outfit.

Another crucial rule is to go for clothes with solid colours. Avoid prints and patterns, as they can make the final look too heavy and confused. Solid colours are plain and subtle, allowing your chunky accessory to take center stage and shine. They will also draw attention from your boring top or dress, making your chunky accessories come in handy when you want to keep your clothes simple but still look like a million dollars.

Finally, hair up always. Whether you're in braids or your natural hair, always keep your hair up when wearing chunky accessories. If you have short hair, the better. Having your hair down will take the spotlight from your chunky accessories, and when you leave your hair loose, it's likely to get tangled in the accessories, which might get uncomfortable.

By following these five rules, you'll be well on your way to becoming a chunky accessory pro. So, go ahead and add that statement piece to your outfit – your style will thank you!
