On Thursday night, a devastating accident occurred on the Machakos-Kitui Road, claiming the lives of five people.
The victims were traveling in a 14-seater matatu that rammed into the rear part of a lorry at Kingaatuani area in Mwala.
According to eyewitnesses, the matatu was carrying 16 passengers, exceeding the legally allowed capacity of eight.
John Musembi, a passenger on the matatu, accused the driver of reckless driving, stating that he was speeding to beat the 9pm curfew cut-off.
"He was speeding so that he could beat the 9pm curfew cut-off. On reaching Kingaatuani, we rammed on the rear part of a lorry, which was dangerously parked on the roadside," Musembi told K24 Digital.
Three of the victims died on the spot, while two succumbed to their injuries while being taken to hospital.
Eight survivors were received at the Machakos Level 5 Hospital, with seven of them being treated and discharged.
