Kenya's Domestic Exports Rise by 5.3% in Q1 2020

According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics' Quarter One Balance of Payments Report published on July 10, 2020, Kenya's domestic exports grew by 5.3% to KSh 144.9 billion in Q1 2020 compared to KSh 137.6 billion in Q1 2019.

Tea and horticulture were the main drivers of this growth, accounting for KSh 34.1 billion and KSh 35.3 billion respectively. In contrast, cement was the least exported product, valued at KSh 115 million.

However, domestic exports for coffee and horticulture fell by 10.2% and 4.2% respectively in Q1 2020 compared to the same period in 2019.

Kenya's total exports increased by 14% to KSh 179.8 billion, while total imports increased by KSh 1.9 billion to KSh 426.4 billion in Q1 2020. As a result, the balance of trade improved by KSh 20.1 billion to KSh 246.1 billion in Q1 2020 compared to the same period in 2019.

Notably, Pakistan has become Kenya's top export destination, with exports to the country growing by 19.4% to KSh 24.13 billion in the first five months of 2020. Tea accounted for the majority of these exports.
