The initial plan was to allow pupils graduating this year to return to school to prepare for exams, while other children would remain barred from attending.
However, Adamu stated that schools will only reopen when it is safe for children, citing the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the nation.
Adamu did not specify the reason for the policy shift, but emphasized that the safety of children is the top priority.
Nigeria has reported 30,249 new coronavirus cases, including 460 deaths, and has relaxed some lockdown restrictions in recent weeks to protect the economy.
