Published on July 10, 2020, the Gikuyu Council of Elders under the Kiama Kia-Ma Supreme Council urged Deputy President William Ruto and his allies to stop being power-hungry and support President Uhuru Kenyatta's development agenda.
The elders, addressing the press in Nairobi, accused a section of leaders in the government of being greedy and only concentrating on the 2022 elections instead of joining forces with the president to fight the Covid-19 pandemic and corruption in the country.
According to Muthamaki Kariuki wa Kibui, the elders do not want to be divided and expect every leader to join President Uhuru Kenyatta in delivering services to the people.
Wa Kibui also condemned the lack of ethical leadership among some leaders who openly disrespect and abuse others, saying it was uncalled for.
The elders supported constitutional reforms, provided they guarantee peace, improvement of livelihoods, and basic freedom.
They also hinted that the rite of passage in the Gikuyu land would be suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic and sought an audience with the Health ministry on protocols and guidelines to be followed.
Wa Kibui said, “Following discussions, we have decided to engage the Health CS Mutahi Kagwe to provide guidelines and protocols for the organised rite of passage, so that we, as traditional leaders, continue with the rite.”
