This archive report was first published on 10 July 2020.

On June 6, 2020, the head of the presidential escort unit, Mr George Kirera, issued a notice banning the consumption of miraa and muguka among officers attached to the Presidential escort team.

The ban was enforced to mitigate health risks associated with the mild stimulants, not only to the officers but also to their families.

According to the notice, chewing miraa and muguka poses significant health risks, and any officer found consuming the substance at the work station or within the camps will face disciplinary action.

Scientists have previously established that miraa consumption can affect a man's sexual capability, a finding that may be particularly relevant to officers who are addicted to the substance.
