On July 10, 2020, the wheels of justice in Kenya were put to the test in the case of Makau Musyoka, a 27-year-old man brutally murdered in 2017.
According to an investigative report, Musyoki's body was found near his homestead in Kangundo, Machakos County, with a postmortem revealing that he was hit on the head using a blunt object.
Police investigations identified Musyoki's uncle, Evans Kasyoki, as the prime suspect in the murder. It is alleged that Kasyoki orchestrated the murder to claim a life insurance policy worth Sh. 9 million from two insurance companies.
Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji ordered investigations into the circumstances surrounding Musyoki's murder in 2018, following an investigative news report that aired on a local television station.
"The DPP's attention has been drawn to a new feature appearing on Citizen Kenya Prime Time news in regard to the Kangundo incident. Due to the nature of the case, the DPP has directed that immediate legal steps be taken to ensure justice is done," read a statement from Haji's office in 2018.
Despite the DPP's directive, Kasyoki was released on cash bail of Sh. 3 million in September 2018, pending hearing and determination of his murder trial.
