Published on July 10, 2020, a Nairobi man, Leonard Yamuremye, has been charged with assault and causing actual bodily harm after a fight with a sex worker over payment.

According to reports, the incident occurred on June 29 at a friend's house in Umoja Estate, Nairobi. Yamuremye had paid the sex worker for a specified duration, but he attempted to exceed the time, demanding that she review her terms, which he deemed 'exorbitant.'

The sex worker, who had accompanied her friend to the house, refused to comply with Yamuremye's demands, leading to a fight between the two. She later lodged a complaint at Buruburu police station.

Police initially recommended rape charges against Yamuremye, but the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions declined and registered assault charges instead.

Yamuremye denied the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Merissa Opondo of Makadara Law Courts and was released on a cash bail of Sh20,000. The hearing of the case is set to start on September 13.
