Published on July 10, 2020, the Oppo A92 is the second Oppo smartphone I have used this year, following the Oppo Reno3, which left a lasting impression.
With a price tag of Kshs 30,000, the Oppo A92 had one job: not to disappoint. Fortunately, it did not.
One of the standout features of the Oppo A92 is its design, which blends the old with the new. The device has a noticeably chunkier chin flanked by slim bezels and a punch-hole to accommodate the 16-megapixel selfie camera.
The quad-camera array at the back is implemented in a way that is flush with the rest of the device, and there is no wobble when the device is placed on a flat surface.
Interestingly, the Oppo A92 is not a fingerprint magnet, and the Twilight Black colour model is particularly impressive.
The device is also slightly heavier and thicker than the Oppo Reno3, but this is likely due to the beefy battery.
The display, which Oppo calls a 'Neo-display', is just fine, with a Full HD panel that is suitable for consuming content. The colour reproduction and viewing angles are also good enough that you won't be stuck noticing details you shouldn't.
However, the device's screen struggles to keep up with brightness outdoors, but this is a minor issue.
One of the key differences between the Oppo A92 and the Oppo Reno3 is the camera. While the Reno3 has better optics, the A92 still takes acceptable low-light shots and good snaps in sufficient lighting.
Another difference is the performance. The Oppo A92 is fast and stable, with an octa-core Snapdragon 665 from Qualcomm and 8 gigabytes of memory, which is very generous at this price point.
The software experience on the Oppo A92 is also impressive, with few things that set it apart from the Oppo Reno3, such as the swapping of Oppo's messages application for Google's and the omission of the Oppo Smart Assistant.
Despite packing a big battery, the Oppo A92's battery drain is a little on the higher side, especially if you are pushing the device hard.
Overall, the Oppo A92 is a solid mid-range smartphone that offers impressive performance, good cameras, and a long-lasting battery, all at an affordable price of Kshs 30,000.
It's a no-brainer for anyone looking for a smartphone within this budget.
