On July 10, 2020, a devastating road accident occurred at Kingaatuani downhill in Masii, Machakos County, when two 14-seater matatus collided with a lorry.

According to reports, five people tragically lost their lives in the incident, while scores of passengers were injured.

Photos from the scene showed that the matatus had rammed into the lorry from behind.

Rescue efforts were underway as the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals.

As of April 13, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) reported a decrease in the number of passengers who have lost their lives on the road compared to the same period in 2019.

However, the authority noted that more pedestrians (367) have lost their lives since the year began compared to 348 who died in 2019.

Motorcyclists and cyclists were also among the vulnerable road users prone to being casualties of road accidents.
