On July 7, 2020, Kenya's Education Ministry announced the cancellation of the 2020 academic year due to the rising number of COVID-19 infections in the country.
As a result, all primary and secondary schools were directed to refund second and third term fees to parents.
However, Education CS Prof. George Magoha suggested that schools and parents could strike an agreement to let the fees cover for when schools reopen in January 2021.
The decision to annul the 2020 school calendar was informed by the rising number of Covid-19 infections in the country, with 8,528 confirmed cases as of July 8, 2020.
