Published on July 9, 2020, a fuel shortage has hit Kisii and Nyamira towns, causing long queues at fuel stations.
Most matatu operators, boda boda operators, and car users have been fighting for the little petrol available in filling stations in the two towns. In recent days, the situation has worsened, with many car owners forced to park their vehicles in line.
Shell station has been the only filling pump in Kisii town offering relief to motorists. Justine Monyancha, a resident who drives to work in Nyamira town from Kemera market, has been forced to use public service vehicles, which have hiked their bus fares.
"It is unlikely that we have a fuel shortage. Some unscrupulous business people could be targeting to increase fuel prices," said Monyancha.
Kisii Police Commander Jabel Munene has promised to investigate claims by some locals that some business people are playing games. "I am moving out to establish what is causing the shortage," said Munene.
