On Thursday, July 9, 2020, comedian Nick Chege, alias Kartelo, made a significant move in the entertainment industry by launching his online radio station, Rieng Radio, during a meeting with Deputy President William Ruto at his home in Karen, Nairobi.
As part of his weekly empowerment program for youths in the capital, Ruto was joined by Kartelo and comedian Mwasia Mutua, popularly known as Chipukeezy, who also made an appearance at the event.
"We have come up with a radio for the youth, we want to create a media station dedicated to the youth, you know we have a lot of energy, we just want to focus on art, singing and acting," Kartelo announced during the unveiling.
According to Kartelo, Rieng Radio has been gaining traction, with over 700,000 online streams in the last month. The radio station has also had 11 shows posted on Kartelo's YouTube Channel, which has amassed over 25,000 subscribers.
During the meeting, Ruto supported youths from Westlands, Kasarani, Embakasi East, and Kamkunji constituencies with various items, including carts, wheelbarrows, power generators, screen printing equipment, water tanks, and salon equipment.
The Deputy President also emphasized the importance of recognizing micro, small, and medium-sized businesses as central forces of innovation, job creation, and economic growth in the country.
Notably, Kartelo shared his personal story of struggling with drug abuse and how he found solace in comedy, crediting God for his journey and his collaboration with Chipukeezy.
