On July 8, 2020, Nigeria's education minister, Adamu Adamu, announced that the country would not reopen schools for examinations or any other reason until it is safe for children.

The decision comes after a continued increase in COVID-19 infections in the country, with 30,249 new cases reported, including 460 deaths.

Initially, the presidential taskforce on the new coronavirus had said that pupils due to graduate this year would be able to go back to school to prepare for exams, while other children would remain barred from attending.

However, Adamu stated that schools will only reopen when the situation is right, not when the incidence of the infection is going up in the nation.

Despite the rising number of cases, Nigerian authorities have relaxed some lockdown restrictions in recent weeks in an effort to protect the economy.

Domestic flights resumed on July 8, 2020, a week after a ban on interstate travel was lifted.
