Rebecca Miano, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen), has been appointed to the World Bank Group's Advisory Council on Gender and Development. The appointment, which took effect on July 2, 2020, is for a period of two years.
Ms. Miano, who has been at the helm of KenGen since November 2017, expressed her honor at being considered for the position and her enthusiasm for joining the council. She noted that gender development and mainstreaming is a major growth catalyst in organizations, citing KenGen's Pink Energy Initiative as an example.
The World Bank Group's Advisory Council on Gender and Development focuses on promoting gender equality and empowering women globally. The council provides guidance on how to address the constraints to gender equality and give women a voice in decision-making processes.
Ms. Miano's appointment comes at a critical time when the world is grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to an increase in cases of gender-based violence. According to FIDA-Kenya, the prolonged stay at home has exposed women and girls to abuse, with most cases reported being intimate-partner violence.
