A Tanzania national has been charged with attempting to steal over Sh5 million from the Kenya Bureau of Standards.

John William Mangesho, who appeared before Milimani Resident Magistrate Sinkian Tobiko, denied the fraud charges.

According to the prosecution, Mangesho allegedly attempted to divert payments of Sh 5,490,041.40 that were due for the Kenya Bureau of Standards from the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) to Kenya Commercial Bank.

The accused is alleged to have committed the offence on diverse dates between April 27, and May 13, 2020 at an unknown place within the Republic of Kenya jointly with others not before court, by use of electronic means.

However, the court ruled that the reasons tabled by the prosecution were not sufficient grounds to warrant denial of his bail.

He was released on a cash bail of Ksh500,000 or alternatively bond of Sh 1 million with one surety of a similar amount to secure his release pending the hearing and determination of the case.

The case will be mentioned on July 22.
