On Thursday, 9th July 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta made a statement at Harambee House in Nairobi, endorsing Amina Mohamed for the position of Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
According to President Kenyatta, the Republic of Kenya submitted Amina Mohamed's candidature on 7th July 2020, making her the first African and first woman to be considered for the top job at the WTO.
President Kenyatta highlighted Amina Mohamed's extensive experience with the WTO, having chaired various high-level decision-making bodies, including the Ministerial Conference, General Council, Dispute Settlement Body, and Trade Policy Review Body.
He also praised her track record in international relations, political experience, and her dedication to championing the benefits of trade to alleviate poverty and improve living standards globally.
President Kenyatta noted that Amina Mohamed has served in various ministerial portfolios, including Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Education, Science and Technology, and Sports, Culture and Heritage.
He also mentioned her successful chairmanship of the 10th WTO Ministerial Conference in Nairobi and her current presidency of the 14th United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.
President Kenyatta expressed his confidence in Amina Mohamed's leadership abilities, describing her as an effective leader and master consensus builder who listens to advice and works hard to find common ground.
He concluded by stating that her leadership at the WTO would be a game-changer, enabling the institution to meet the requirements of its member states and address the evolving demands of the 21st century.
