Kenya has reported its highest number of COVID-19 cases in 24 hours, with 447 new cases confirmed on July 9, 2020, according to Health CS Mutahi Kagwe.
The new cases were out of 3,803 samples tested, bringing the total number of positive cases in the country to 8,975. Mutahi Kagwe noted that tested samples in the country have now exceeded 200,000.
Of the new cases, 280 were males and 167 were females, with the youngest patient being just one year old. Mutahi Kagwe observed that COVID-19 appears to affect men more than women, based on the statistics.
The government is particularly concerned about the high number of cases in Mombasa County, where 138 out of 100,000 people are likely to test positive for COVID-19. This is higher than the 100 cases per 100,000 people in Nairobi.
CS Mutahi Kagwe warned that Mombasa's high case numbers may surge further, and urged Kenyans to desist from unnecessary movement and protect their loved ones from the virus.
Four more people have succumbed to the virus in the past 24 hours, bringing the number of deaths to 13. However, 64 patients were discharged after full recovery.
