Kenyan presidential escort officers have been cautioned about the dangers of miraa (khat) consumption, following a 2015 study that highlighted its potential health risks.

According to the study, miraa use can lead to heart problems and even heart attacks. Lead scientist Ochiba Lukanda stated that the research, which was conducted in the Middle East, showed that miraa users were more likely to experience erectile dysfunction and other bedroom issues.

Additionally, the study found that miraa consumption can cause blood pressure to rise, but it does not cause cancer. The researchers also noted that miraa users who engage in excessive consumption may experience withdrawal symptoms, leading to a drop in academic performance and other negative consequences.

As a result, the head of the presidential escort unit has issued a warning to officers, stating that those found to be consuming miraa will face consequences.
