On October 2, 2019, LinkedIn rolled out a new feature that lets users record and upload up to 10-second audio clips to help others pronounce their names correctly.

The feature, which was in beta testing for a couple of weeks, is now available to LinkedIn's 690 million users worldwide.

According to LinkedIn, the audio clips will appear as an icon on the right-hand side of profile names, allowing users to easily access and listen to the pronunciation.

To add a recording on your profile, follow these steps:

  • Open the LinkedIn mobile app and tap View Profile.
  • Tap Edit.
  • Click on the Record name Pronunciation option.
  • Make sure your clip is within the 10-second limit.
  • Upload it on your profile and save.

Joseph Akoni, a product manager at LinkedIn, explained that the feature is designed to minimize awkward or unprofessional mistakes when speaking to contacts for the first time.

As he noted, "everyone, including myself, makes mistakes when pronouncing other people's names. I've encountered this personally with my Nigerian middle name - there's a 99% chance someone won't pronounce it correctly on the first try."
