On July 9, 2020, a Tanzania national, John William Mangesho, was granted bail after being charged with attempting to fraudulently access Sh 5,490,041.40 from the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) meant for the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KBS).
According to the charges, Mangesho allegedly accessed the official email accounts of KBS and NSSF and attempted to divert payments to a Kenya Commercial Bank account.
The accused was released on a cash bail of Sh 500,000 with one Kenyan contact person or could deposit a bond of Sh 1 million with one surety of a similar amount.
Prosecution had objected Mangesho's release on bail, citing lack of proof of nationality and no family ties in Kenya. However, the court ruled that the reasons provided by the prosecution were not sufficient grounds to warrant denial of bail.
Senior Resident Magistrate Sinkyian Tobiko noted that the prosecution had not requested the necessary documents from Mangesho, which would have been provided had they been asked for.
The case will be mentioned on July 22, 2020.
