Garissa County has been hit by a fresh wave of terror attacks, with suspected Al Shabaab militants destroying a communications mast in Korakora area on Thursday morning.
According to eyewitnesses, over 20 gunmen attacked the mast before being repulsed by officers manning the site. Fortunately, no one was injured in the attack.
North Eastern regional police boss, Mr Rono Bunei, confirmed the incident and assured that security officials had launched an operation to track down the perpetrators.
“Already our officers are combing the region. Luckily none was injured,” he said.
On Monday, Kenyan security agencies foiled another attack where suspected terrorists hijacked a car and kidnapped eight people. The authorities were tipped off and acted quickly to save the eight, who were being taken to Somalia via Wajir County.
Before the Covid-19 pandemic, the North Eastern region had seen an upsurge in terror attacks by the Somalia-based group. Intelligence reports had warned that militants were targeting vital communication installations along the Kenya-Somalia border.
