This archive report was first published on 9 July 2020.

On July 9, 2020, Pastor Robert Burale's story of being infected with Covid-19 sparked a wave of criticism and accusations from Kenyans, who claimed he was pretending to be sick to gain empathy.

However, many failed to focus on the main message of his story, which was to educate people about the reality of the coronavirus.

Instead, they chose to attack him, bringing up past 'mistakes' and allegations of conning celebrities, including Nini Wacera.

As one social media user aptly put it, 'Baraka ya mwenzio usiilalie mlango wazi' (Do not let someone else's blessings blind you to the truth).

It is worth noting that Pastor Burale has made amends for his past mistakes and has been open about his experiences.

But the question remains: does the attack on Burale prove that Kenyans are a bitter lot, seeking to bring others down to make themselves feel better?
