On July 9, 2020, Zimbabwe's government requested Kenya's assistance in extraditing Jonathan Moyo, a former Higher Education Minister, who fled the country in 2017 following the coup that led to President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa's installation.
Moyo, who was charged with fraud involving over $400,000 in public funds, denies the allegations, claiming the case is politically motivated.
According to Zanu PF secretary for administration Obert Mpofu, Zimbabwe wants Moyo expelled to prevent him from mobilizing against President Mnangagwa's government.
However, Zimbabwe and Kenya do not have an extradition treaty, but Harare claims there is a provision for the two countries to facilitate Moyo's return to face criminal charges.
Moyo, who claims there has been an assassination attempt against him, has a controversial past in both Zimbabwe and Kenya.
He was implicated in a corruption scandal involving about $6 million while working for the Ford Foundation in Nairobi in the 1990s.
