Rebecca Miano, Managing Director and CEO of Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen), has been appointed to the World Bank Group's Advisory Council on Gender and Development, a prestigious position that underscores her commitment to promoting gender equality.
According to a statement from KenGen, Miano's appointment to the Advisory Council will be for a period of two years, commencing on July 2nd, 2020. The council is composed of representatives from government ministries, the private sector, academia, and non-profit institutions, all working together to advance gender equality globally.
As a member of the Advisory Council, Miano will be part of a team tasked with examining progress and constraints to gender equality worldwide and providing feedback and guidance on the World Bank's work in this area. The council also offers an opportunity for its members to influence the direction of the World Bank's work, including reducing the gaps between men and women.
On accepting the invitation to join the Advisory Council, Miano noted that gender development and mainstreaming is a key driver of organizational growth, contributing to increased productivity and competitiveness.
World Bank Managing Director Mari E Pangestu highlighted the institution's commitment to gender equality, stating that in 2016, the Group began implementing a new gender strategy aimed at achieving key results, including closing gaps in education and health, promoting women's voice and agency, and reducing gender-based violence.
