Facebook Embraces Remote Work ¶
On July 9, 2020, Facebook Inc announced a significant shift in its work culture, embracing remote work permanently even after the coronavirus lockdowns ease. This move marks a significant acceleration of the tech sector's geographic diversification away from Silicon Valley.
According to Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook's Chief Executive, the company will start 'aggressively opening up remote hiring' and expects about half of its workforce to work remotely over the next five to 10 years. Existing employees will be taken into consideration based on job function and past performance, with a deadline of January 1, 2021, to update the company on their new locations.
Facebook will also build three new 'hubs' in Atlanta, Dallas, and Denver where remote workers in those areas can occasionally meet. The company has already confirmed plans to hire 10,000 engineers and product employees this year.
