On July 7, 2020, the Kenyan Education Ministry announced the cancellation of the 2020 academic year due to the rising number of Covid-19 infections in the country.

As a result, an earlier plan to reopen schools on September 1st, 2020 was shelved, and schools will now be opened in January 2021.

Education CS Prof. George Magoha stated that schools and parents can strike an agreement to let the fees cover for when schools reopen in January 2021.

The 2020 Class 8 and Form 4 candidates will sit their KCPE and KCSE examinations respectively later in 2021.

Additionally, all learners in Grade 1 to 4 and Standard 5 to 7 as well as Form 1 to 3 will remain in their current classes next year.
