On July 8, 2020, Ivory Coast was plunged into mourning following the sudden death of Prime Minister Amadou Gon Coulibaly.
According to President Alassane Ouattara, Coulibaly, 61, became unwell during a weekly cabinet meeting and was rushed to a hospital where he passed away.
Coulibaly had been handpicked as the ruling RHDP party's candidate in March for the October presidential election and had returned to the country on July 2 after a prolonged stay in France to undergo a heart exam and rest.
He had previously undergone heart surgery in 2012.
President Ouattara expressed his condolences to the nation, saying that the country was mourning the loss of its prime minister.
