On July 8, 2020, Kenya's Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) services, also known as the Madaraka Express, will resume operations between Nairobi and Mombasa under strict coronavirus protocols.

According to Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia, the SGR services will operate at 50% capacity, with an additional coach for isolation.

Kenya Railway Services will provide ten coaches to ferry approximately 600 passengers during the one-way trip.

Speaking on the resumption of services, Macharia emphasized the importance of staying alert and controlling the spread of COVID-19, saying, 'We must always stay alert while the COVID-19 pandemic persists. We must continue to control the virus and save lives because if we all play our part we shall defeat the virus and revive the economy and boost the economic fortunes of the country.'

The first SGR train is scheduled to depart Nairobi at 8am on Monday and arrive at the Coast at 12:45pm.

Additionally, the government will introduce a new commuter service linking the Nairobi SGR terminus in Syokimau to Nairobi Central Business District, with the first service departing at 6:35am.
