On July 7, 2020, a 55-year-old woman from Elukho Village in Lurambi Constituency, Kakamega County, was caught having sex with a pastor who was not her husband.
The woman, Jane Omwaga, and her lover, Moses Olutatwa, 52, a pastor at the Solid Rock for Jesus Christ Church in Lurambi, were instructed by Luhya elders to offer a cow each for a cleansing ritual.
The ritual aimed to shield the wrongdoers' families against misfortunes such as mysterious ailments or deaths, according to Jackson Makale, one of the elders.
Jane's husband, Josephat Omwaga, 59, a security guard, caught his wife in bed with Olutatwa in the early hours of Monday morning.
During the ensuing melee, Olutatwa escaped on foot, leaving behind his motorcycle and some of his clothes.
Jane blamed her husband for not fulfilling his sexual and financial obligations, which she claimed pushed her into the arms of Pastor Olutatwa.
"The pastor came to my home at 5am and knocked on my door. We told stories for some time and, thereafter, got in bed. We got intimate, and while at it, I heard my husband knocking on the door," Jane said.
"The pastor had seduced me recently. He said he wanted me, both emotionally and sexually. And, because he had shown that he had my interest at heart — by offering me financial and emotional support — I decided to allow him have sex with me," Jane added.
However, Jane's husband, Josephat, refused to forgive her, stating that he would divorce her and sell their matrimonial home.
