On July 8, 2020, Kenya made a significant move in the global trade arena by nominating Sports Minister Amina Mohamed for the position of World Trade Organization (WTO) director general.
The WTO is currently seeking a new leader to replace Brazil's Roberto Azevedo, who is stepping down a year early.
Ms. Mohamed is one of six candidates vying for the top job, alongside Nigeria's Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who has received backing from the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas).
Other countries that have nominated candidates for the position include South Korea, Mexico, Moldova, and Egypt, which has put forward Egyptian lawyer Abdel Hamid Mamdouh.
The nomination process is set to close on Wednesday, with the selection of the new WTO director general expected to be a closely watched event.
