On July 8, 2020, a Garissa court made a crucial decision in a high-profile rape case involving a Wajir assistant chief.
Kalmoi Shale Ahmed, the accused, was remanded in custody until all civilian witnesses in the case testify.
The order was given after the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) applied to have the suspect remain in custody, citing concerns that he could interfere with witnesses if released.
The ODPP had transferred the matter from Wajir to Garissa to prevent witness interference.
According to reports, the accused pleaded not guilty to charges of rape and wrongful distribution of obscene images, as well as an alternative count of indecent act.
He denied the charges and applied for bail, but the State prosecutor opposed the application, arguing that the accused's position as a Wajir assistant chief made him a potential threat to witnesses.
