On July 8, 2020, international cricket resumed in the United Kingdom after a coronavirus lockdown, with England and West Indies players showing solidarity with the Black Lives Matter campaign.
Both teams had previously announced that they would be wearing Black Lives Matter logos on their shirts during the three-match series.
England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and decided to bat, but the morning session was washed out due to rain.
Before the start of play, the players observed a minute's silence in memory of the victims of COVID-19 and West Indies great Everton Weekes, who passed away at the age of 95 just last week.
West Indies players also wore black gloves on their right hands, echoing the Black Power protests made famous by US athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.
As play resumed, Kemar Roach bowled the first ball, and Rory Burns narrowly escaped a confident lbw appeal off the fourth ball.
However, England lost their first wicket off the 10th ball when Dom Sibley was bowled for a duck by fast bowler Shannon Gabriel.
Rain stopped play at 1317 GMT, with England at one for one off three overs.
