On July 13th, 2020, Kenya Railways Corporation will resume its standard gauge railway passenger train services between Nairobi and Mombasa, following the lifting of a partial lockdown by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

According to a notice from the corporation, a new schedule for the train will be released, allowing passengers to travel between the two cities.

“Following the lifting of cessation of movement order by President Kenyatta, we wish to inform the public that the Ministry of Transport and Kenya Railways in conjunction with the SGR operator Africa Star Railways Operation Ltd (Afristar) will be releasing a new operational schedule in due course,” the notice reads.

During the lockdown, Africa Star Railway Operation Company (Afristar), the firm contracted to run and maintain the railway, only offered cargo services between Nairobi and Mombasa.

President Kenyatta had prohibited the movement of people into and out of the Nairobi Metropolitan Area, Mombasa, Kilifi, and Kwale in March to curb the spread of Covid-19.

However, with the partial lockdown lifted, the SGR passenger service will resume on July 13th at 8am, with strict Covid-19 safety measures in place, including a 50pc capacity in the train cabins.
