Defending champion Lewis Hamilton has denied any suggestion that his Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas held him up in the latter stages of the Austrian GP.

Hamilton had a five-second penalty coming his way after the stewards deemed that he caused a collision with Alex Albon, which dropped him from P2 to P4.

However, Hamilton insists that Bottas wouldn't intentionally hold him up, saying 'I know Valtteri better than probably a lot of other people, being that we've worked so closely over these last few years.'

Hamilton's comments come after Bottas explained that he slowed down due to yellow flags caused by Daniil Kvyat and to prepare for a shot at the fastest lap on the last lap of the race.

When asked if there was any tension between himself and Hamilton, Bottas replied, 'There are incidents and unlucky events, and I'm sure you all know that in F1 many things can happen and sometimes things just go the way they go.'

Despite the controversy, Bottas remains confident that there is no tension between himself and Hamilton, saying 'He is pretty experienced, Lewis, in this sport, so he knows things can happen.'

Hamilton and Bottas' Mercedes team is currently leading the constructors' championship.
