On July 8, 2020, Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia announced that the Madaraka Express passenger service would resume on Monday, July 13, following the lifting of the ban on movement in and out of Nairobi and Mombasa.
According to CS Macharia, the first train would depart Nairobi at 8am on Monday and arrive at the Coast at 12.45pm.
The train would then leave Mombasa for Nairobi at 1.25pm and return to the Capital at 6.40pm, allowing ample time for passengers to reach their destinations before the commencement of the curfew at 9pm.
Kenya Railways would deploy 10 coaches for passengers, with a total one-way capacity of 600 passengers, which is 50 percent capacity.
Additionally, an extra coach would be deployed for the isolation of passengers suspected to be infected with COVID-19 during the journey.
CS Macharia explained that the extra coach would leave empty and would be used to carry any suspected case of COVID-19 detected during the journey between Nairobi and Mombasa and vice versa.
