On July 8, 2020, the Kenyan government took a significant step towards addressing the country's housing crisis by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with county governments to develop affordable housing projects.

The MOU requires developers to design and construct buildings according to the Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies (EDGE) standard, which aims to reduce energy, water, and embodied energy in materials by 20% compared to a base case building.

This initiative is part of the government's efforts to tackle climate change effects, including droughts and floods that have been ravaging the country.

Kenya has joined other nations in affirming global commitments by ratifying climate action agreements and domesticating them in national laws and strategies to ensure action at all levels of government.
