On July 8, 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta made a special request to ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru during a historic video call from Radat, Baringo County. The President asked Mucheru to bring him honey on his way back, praising the quality of Baringo honey as the best in the world.
"Bring honey, Baringo honey is probably the best in the world, God bless you young men and I wish you all the success, let us continue working together," noted the President.
During the video call, Mucheru shared a panoramic view of the area with the President, who was one of the first people to use the 4G Loon signal in the area. The Cabinet Minister also promised to deliver the honey as requested by the President.
The historic video call was facilitated by Telkom Chairman, Edward Njoroge, and Chief Executive Officer Mugo Kibati, who were also present during the call. The President was delighted with the innovation being utilized in the area, which was made possible by the partnership between Telkom Kenya and Google Loon.
Loon is a radical approach to expanding Internet connectivity, which uses a network of balloons to extend Internet connectivity to rural areas. The service was announced to be available to Kenyans starting July 2020, covering a region spanning nearly 50,000 sq.km.
