Kenya has confirmed 8,528 COVID-19 cases, with 278 new cases reported in the last 24 hours from a sample size of 3,053.

According to the Health Cabinet Secretary, Mutahi Kagwe, the total number of cases in the country now stands at 8,528, from a total of 196,508 samples tested so far.

Speaking during his tour of Makueni County to assess the level of COVID-19 preparedness, Kagwe noted that 89 patients have been discharged from various hospitals, bringing the total number of recoveries to 2,593.

However, the country has lost two patients to the disease, bringing the fatality to 169, with the Health Cabinet Secretary extending his condolences to the families and friends who have lost their loved ones.

CS Kagwe emphasized that the virus is well established at the community level, with all counties, except 5, having reported cases of COVID-19. Makueni County has met the 300 bed isolation capacity in line with the directives by the President.

He lauded the county's level of preparedness in combating the virus, noting that alongside the isolation facility capacity, there are two ICU and 20 HDU beds, plus two quarantine facilities.

CS Kagwe also commended healthcare workers for their dedication and commitment to duty, and called on Kenyans to take individual responsibility to avoid inter-county spread of COVID-19.
