On July 8, 2020, Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha announced that the 2020 academic year would be considered lost due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
As a result, all primary and secondary schools were directed to refund second and third term fees to parents who had paid.
However, parents and institutions can come to an alternative agreement to let the fee cover for when schools reopen next year, according to CS Magoha.
Prof. Magoha made the announcement after consultations with all industry stakeholders and considering COVID-19 mitigation measures.
Initially, the plan was to begin phased reopening in September 2020, but parents expressed reservations about sending their children to school due to the spike in coronavirus cases.
As a result, the 2020 Standard 8 and Form 4 candidates will now sit their KCPE and KCSE examinations respectively later in the year of 2021.
Additionally, all students and pupils will have no choice but to repeat their current classes.
Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions and Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) will however resume this year respectively, but under strict guidelines.
