On July 7, 2020, a crucial meeting took place between National Assembly Majority Leader Amos Kimunya and Suna East Member of Parliament (MP) Junet Mohamed to resolve a long-standing row over house leadership positions.
According to Junet, the meeting lasted for five hours and resulted in a mutually agreed list of house committees, which will be presented in Parliament the following week.
Junet took to Twitter to confirm the meeting and the agreement reached with Kimunya, stating, "Held a meeting with Majority Leader Amos Kimunya over House Committees. We have mutually agreed on the list, to be tabled when the house resumes next week."
As a result of the agreement, ODM will chair three committees: Education, Finance and Planning, and the Parliamentary Broadcasting and Library Committee. They will also hold vice-chair positions in the Legal Affairs and Constitution Implementation Oversight committees.
Among the beneficiaries of the agreement are Homa Bay Woman Representative Gladys Wanga, who will chair the Finance and Planning Committee, and Busia Woman Representative Florence Mutua, who will chair the Education team.
Other notable appointments include Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo as the new Deputy Chair of the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee and Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma as the new vice-chair of the Constitution Implementation Oversight Committee.
Wiper Party is also set to benefit from the agreement, with Mavoko MP Patrick Makau being appointed as the chair of the Sports, Culture and Tourism Committee.
With the row over parliamentary committee positions now resolved, the handshake between Jubilee and ODM appears to be intact.
