On July 8, 2020, ride hailing app SWVL notified customers of a security breach that exposed personal information of passengers.
According to a notice by SWVL, the breach occurred on July 3, 2020, and compromised names, email addresses, and phone numbers.
However, the company assured customers that passwords and credit card information were not affected.
SWVL advised customers to change their passwords on the app and on any other site where they had used the same.
Experts warn that hackers use information from data breaches to access other linked accounts on other sites with similar password combinations, gaining credit or debit card information or using the accounts to fleece contacts of the account holder.
This is not the first ride hailing app to become a victim of a data breach. Uber was hacked in 2016, exposing information belonging to 57 million riders and drivers, while Yahoo experienced multiple data breaches between 2013 and 2016, affecting three billion accounts.
