On Sunday, July 5, 2020, a devastating incident shook Luyekhe village, located on the border of Kakamega and Bungoma counties, when an expectant mother, Winny Kulangwa, threw her three children into River Nzoia and then followed suit.

According to eyewitnesses, Kulangwa, 24, took her children to the nearby Nzoia Bridge and threw them into the water, one after the other, starting with the eldest, a seven-year-old girl, who miraculously survived.

The girl, a pupil at Mbaya Primary in Kakamega, recounted her harrowing experience, saying her mother asked them to accompany her to the shop, but instead, she threw her into the river. The girl clutched onto some roots on the edge of the river and managed to escape.

Rescue efforts were underway, with divers deployed by Kakamega County searching for the bodies of Kulangwa and her two children, aged one and four. The river was swollen, making the retrieval of the bodies a challenging task.

Locals described the girl's survival as a miracle, and her story has left the community in shock.
